November 6th 6:30pm : Rayzilla’s Dreamboats

Ray “rayzilla” Villadonga is a 3rd generation Tampon (he prefers this term to Tampanian, it’s more absorbent ;)). His family’s roots are from Northern Spain. His grandparents’ migrated to Florida at in the early 1900’s and worked in Tampa’s cigar industry. Ray took piano lesson at 7 years of age. After a few months his teacher told his mom that he should play drums. At age 12 after hearing Jimi Hendrix and George Gershwin he asked for a guitar. His mom bought him a Sears Silvertone Electric Guitar (He wishes he still had it!). He took a few lessons but is mostly self-taught. He began writing songs within a few weeks. He played flute in the Tampa Catholic Band (they don’t have one anymore). Attending USF School of Music and the University of Iowa, he studied music composition, electronic music and contra bass.
Ray has been a performing musician for over 40 years. His musical history has included the bands, Added Distraction, Sunday Contreras and The Total Eclipse, Rhapcity, Tampa, Devastation, Strut, Maxx, Maggie Council, Cold Joon, Point 6, Musty Buttlers, Antsy McClain & The Trailer Park Troubadours Hu Dost,and WHAA!. Ray’s career has included concerts with: The Marvelettes, Mitch Ryder, 10 Years After, The Dixie Dregs, The Henry Paul Band, Sea Level, Johnny Winter, Robert Plant, Peter Allen, Hot Tuna, Al Stewart, Acoustic Alchemy, The Cowboy Junkies and plenty of lesser known but still powerful deities.

Currently Ray performs with rayzilla’s Dreamboats, the Hindustani fusion band WAHH!, Hu Dost ,Antsy McClain & The Trailer Park Troubadours and solo . His songs are full of humor, horror, satire, local history/ references, love and rhythm. TampAmericana is what he calls it. Strange and Beautiful is what it is. rayzilla is a passionate energetic and charismatic live performer a visual and aural stew of varied influences from Louie Prima to Paul Simon, Zappa to Tom’s Waits & Lehrer.
