First Saturday Jazz: Acme Jazz Garage

Join us for our decade long First Saturday Jazz series on Saturday, September 3rd at 8pm featuring Acme Jazz Garage!
Jazz, blues, funk, fusion and New Orleans R&B meet in the combustible sound of Acme Jazz Garage, featuring guitarist Matt Swenson, pianist/keyboardist Bryan Lewis, bassist Philip Booth, and other musicians primarily based in the Tampa Bay area.
The Florida band has played its eclectic, groove-driven music for receptive audiences at the Gasparilla Music Festival (twice), Clearwater Jazz Holiday, WMNF Tropical Heatwave, Child of the Sun Jazz Festival, SPC Palladium, Skipper’s Smokehouse, and many other festivals, venues, and special events.
“Sharkskin,” the band’s second full-length album, released in fall 2021, so far has been heard on about about 17 radio stations across the US, including WUSF and WMNF in Tampa. It has received positive reviews from Creative Loafing/Tampa, the Toledo (Ohio) Blade and Ken Franckling’s Jazz Notes.
“Acme Jazz Garage,” the band’s debut full-length recording of original music, released in 2016, has aired on about 35 stations across the US, including WUSF and WMNF in Tampa. The CD, which received positive reviews in the pages of Relix magazine, Los Angeles Jazz Scene, Tampa Bay Times and other publications, has Acme joined by special guests including conga master Gumbi Ortiz (Al Di Meola), jazz singer Whitney James, NYC saxophonist Jeremy Powell (Arturo O’Farrill) and veteran musicians Rick Runion and Austin Vickrey on saxophones, trumpeter Ron Wilder, and vibraphonist Sam Koppelman.
Both albums were recorded and mixed by John Stephan at the Springs Theatre Studio in Tampa’s historic Seminole Heights district. “Sharkskin” was also mastered by Stephan. “Acme Jazz Garage” was mastered in L.A. by Ruairi O’Flaherty.
